Playground

Playground

Playground is the contemporary brand within the BHS tabletop family, created in 2017 in response to how modern restaurants present food. While BHS’s heritage brands such as Bauscher and Schönwald are rooted in classic porcelain for hotels and formal dining, Playground was developed for concepts where the table plays a role in storytelling. Playground was designed to meet a demand of more creative tableware, expanding into stoneware, wood, slate, marble, metal and glass. In less than a decade, it has grown into a collection of more than 500 items across around 20 materials, continually refreshed to reflect evolving trends in modern and casual fine dining.

Material-Led Design Philosophy

What sets Playground apart is its deliberate embrace of contrast and texture. Rather than promoting perfectly matched table settings, the brand encourages chefs to layer materials and heights to create visual interest and tactile engagement. A reactive-glaze stoneware bowl paired with crisp porcelain, or a marble plinth supporting a wooden board, reflects how contemporary kitchens actually plate food.

Crucially, Playground is designed to complement existing crockery. Operators can introduce statement pieces gradually, refreshing the visual language of the table without replacing their core porcelain investment.

Key Collections

Playground is organised into focused collections that balance visual impact with professional durability, giving chefs tools to elevate presentation without compromising service practicality.

  • Stoneware Collections: Organic forms with reactive glazes and natural colour variation, ideal for modern bistros and chef-led dining concepts.
  • Mixed-Material Serveware: Marble, slate, wood and metal pieces designed to add height, contrast and structure to sharing dishes and tasting menus.
  • Bread, Bite & Snack Accessories: Baskets, boards and small vessels that elevate first impressions, from bread service to amuse-bouches.
  • Pouring & Service Pieces: Jugs, teapots and decanters that support table-side service and enhance front-of-house theatre.

Why Choose Playground?

Playground is chosen by operators who see tableware as an extension of their brand, not just a functional necessity.

  • Design Flexibility: Allows chefs to express identity through material, texture and form rather than relying solely on traditional porcelain.
  • Easy Integration: Designed to work alongside existing crockery, enabling gradual evolution rather than full replacement.
  • Professional Durability: Engineered for commercial use despite their handcrafted, artisanal aesthetic.
  • Staying Current: Regular new releases allow operators to refresh table presentation seasonally without major reinvestment.
