The optic as a device isn’t the legal requirement – what the Weights and Measures Act 1985 actually requires is that spirits are served in a legal measure of 25ml or 35ml on licensed premises in England, Wales and Scotland. A calibrated optic is the most practical way to comply with that, and the most defensible if it ever comes up during an inspection. Free-pouring spirits on a licensed premises is a different conversation entirely.

Do bar optics need to be approved or stamped?

Yes. Any optic used on licensed premises needs to be stamped or certified to confirm it’s delivering an accurate measure. That requirement has been around since the Weights and Measures Act 1963. All the optics we supply are commercial trade products that meet the relevant UK standards for licensed premises – that’s not something we’d be flexible on.

What is the difference between a 25ml and a 35ml optic?

Just the volume dispensed, but the choice has implications. 25ml is the smaller of the two legal spirit measures and tends to be the default in England. 35ml is more common in Scotland and has become more popular with venues in England that prefer a fuller standard measure – to be fair, customer expectations on what a “single” looks like have shifted a bit over the years. Both are legal under the Weights and Measures Act 1985. Which you run comes down to the premises licence first, then your own preference. Some venues stock optics in both sizes for different spirits, which is a perfectly sensible approach.
